High Mileage Means Lower Quality Oil

When you first get your oil changed, it’s in the best condition it can be. However, as it performs its functions, it comes into contact with heat, which can degrade the quality of the oil and the additives in it. This means that the oil you have when you need it changed is less effective at doing all that oil does. Oil can also burn under high heat, which means that you have small pieces of burnt oil floating through your old oil, making it even less effective.

Old Oil Doesn’t Lubricate as Well

The primary purpose of oil is to lubricate your engine, getting in between moving parts and making sure they smoothly work together. Older oil has less lubricating ability, so more of your engine’s parts grind together as they work. Even small bits of burnt fluid or corrosion that have fallen off can get between those parts and cause wear, like a grain of sand in your eye constantly scratches and hurts. An unlubricated engine will not last long.

Older Oils Can’t Protect Your Engine

Another thing that oil does is protect your engine from corrosion. As you might expect, degraded oil has a harder time protecting your engine from that corrosion, which can eat through the metal and cause small bits of corrosion to flake off into the oil. This clogs your filter faster and could potentially cause less oil to make it to the engine. All of this can create major damage to your car’s engine, just because the oil you have isn’t doing its job correctly.
